College students have a stigma of being poor and the rest of society loves saving money. Therefore, I created this blog with some money saving tips. Some may only apply to college students and some of these tips apply to everyone!
Scholarships
First and foremost, have you taken the time to apply to scholarships? Seriously, have you? What if I told you can be in college and apply for scholarships? YES! OMG WOW! K. Anyway… there are so many out there that go unused every…single…day. A simple google search can lead you to hundreds of scholarships, some which are not necessarily merit-based.
Organizations such as the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), provide scholarships for students with diverse backgrounds.
Links to their scholarship websites are found below:
For my Rutgers School of Engineering Fam! RUSOE opens their scholarship applications during the Spring Semester of every year. I will highly recommend each and everyone of you to apply since there are various scholarships. http://soe.rutgers.edu/scholarships
Books
College books are EXPENSIVE! Oh, and the most frustrating part is when a professor tells you to buy a book and then you NEVER open it. Sometimes you professor will be the author of the book you are buying. EHH, nice business you have there, professor. Anyway, I made it through 5 years of college and I only bought 1 or 2 books at its full price.
How did I do it?
My freshman year books were covered since I am part of the EOF Program. I did buy one new book since at the time I did not know any better. But then I learned about the powers of book trading, buying used books and EZBorrow. Well... mostly EZBorrow.
EZBorrow is a resource provided by Rutgers University Libraries allowing students, faculty, staff to borrow books from over 60 libraries. https://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/e-zborrow I borrow pretty much every book from EZ borrow.
You can also buy a book from an upperclassmen or a friend. Usually in those cases they are sold at a discounted price. Some people even buy used books from the bookstore or Amazon.
Student Discounts!
Having a college student ID is extremely useful for many discounts!
Most electronic stores provide student discounts. So, if you need a new laptop, take advantage of them! Some of these stores are: Apple, Adobe, Dell, Microsoft, Lenovo, Best Buy and HP. There are also clothing and restaurants which also provide student discounts! Simply, ask when you shop!
Do you love museums? Many museums provide student discounts! My last museum visit I saved $5.00 on my ticket.
Coupons!
Coupons are my best friend. I LOVE Couponing. I coupon for clothes, toiletries, food, house supplies, EVERYTHING.
One of my high school friends, Rosemary, has a couponing blog which she shares sales at local stores in New Jersey. I have learned soo much from her!
Online Shopping
If you like online shopping, I recommend you download the following extensions to Chrome:
Honey is simply amazing! As you shop, it checks for coupons that can possibly be applicable for your order. So, there is no need to go on Google to try 10 coupons crossing your fingers that one will work. It’ll do the checks for you.
Ebates gives you MONEY BACK. OMG! I know, you get money for shopping. Woot Woot! Some websites give up-to 15% cash back.
Free is my favorite word! Send me a message if you have any questions!
